Byron McDaniel, Contributor

Mandeville

THE Reverend Canon Judith Daniel was admitted at the St. Augustine Church in Porus, Manchester on Sunday, March 10, to serve as Rector of the Churches and Missions in the Porus Cure of the Anglican Diocese in Jamaica.

In the church packed and overflowing with clergy and laity the 62-year-old mother of three was inducted in the office by the Right Reverend Alfred C. Reid, Anglican Bishop of Jamaica and Grand Cayman.

In 1994 she, along with three other women, were admitted as Deacons in the church. Their appointments were the first such in the Anglican Province of the West Indies.

The incumbent who is married to the Right Reverend Harold Daniel, Bishop of Mandeville, was not always an Anglican. She served the Methodist church in the Bahamas prior to her conversion. On her return to the island, she attended the United Theological Seminary, then at at Caenwood(from 1961-64).

Married in 1966 she worked in St. Ann for 12 years during which she taught at St. John's Preparatory School. She was assistant to Bishop Alfred Reid when he served at Vere and was chaplain for four Corporate Area hospitals. In 1996, she was appointed a priest and admitted to office of Canon on June 5, 2001.
