Hire taxis instead...

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Referring to a recent news item that a number of cars are to be purchased for election campaigning at an estimated cost of not less than US$2 million, wouldn't it be more cost-effective to hire our taxis and provide some additional temporary work for the drivers?

The bulk of the purchase price of these cars will benefit the manufacturers overseas, a couple of car dealerships will get the mark-up, and if I understand correctly, 200 activists will be rewarded with these cars at the end of elections.

Notwithstanding the above and in view of the crime and violence in our society, as well as some recent incidents of looting caused by a political "high", I dare to suggest that we demand that our politicians keep off the roads and conduct their campaigns by means of the various forms of media available to us. All in favour say "aye".

I am, etc.,
