What purpose so many denominations?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I NOTED the comments of your religion feature co-ordinator re the proliferation of religious denominations (primarily Christian) here, said to number over 500 with presumably the attendant diverse doctrinal teachings to boot.

But why is this necessary in a relatively small population of approximately 2.6 million souls? Aren't these zealots going overboard?

In any event, where is the empirical evidence to indicate that all this worshipping has any profound effect on our moral or spiritual rectitude? Just look at the mayhem which persists.

Nevertheless, I believe incorporated churches should pool their vast resources (i.e. millions of dollars together with land) and build modest houses for low-income members, instead of buying/erecting more massive state-of-the-art complexes (which have little to do with salvation).

Parliament could be invited to amend the Real Estate Act accordingly.

I am, etc.,

V.E. 'Rukshsus' MUIR
