Powerful women take centrestage

GENERAL SECRETARY of the People's National Party (PNP), Maxine Henry-Wilson; PNP Senator Aloun D'Nombet Assamba; Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Spokesman on Culture, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and Betty Ann Blaine, executive member of the United People's Party (UPP) will lead the group of influential Jamaican women to perform at the "Powerful Women Perform For Charity" set for the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Saturday, May 5, beginning 5:00 p.m.

Director of Tourism, Fay Pickersgill; Executive Director of the JHTA, Camille Needham; Ambassador Madge Barrett; Postmaster General, Blossom O'Meally-Nelson and broadcaster Beverley Anderson-Manley will also be among the 40-odd "Powerful Women" in Jamaica who have agreed to perform comedy, drama, song and dance for Mustard Seed Communities' Home For Children with AIDS, located at Jerusalem, Spanish Town.

Last year's show raised $700,000 which assisted in the provision of medicine and food for the children at the home and this year the planning committee, headed by Thyra Heaven, is expecting a bigger turnout. In fact, calls have been coming in requesting blocks of tickets for the event.

Fab Five will the backing band for the performers, while the show will be choreographed by famous dancer/-choreographer Bert Rose. A young and creative team of stage designers, Robert Hall and Anthony Johnson will transform the Pegasus Ballroom into a garden free of cost, while complimentary Bailey's from Edwin Charley, as well as Coco Cola, from Caribbean Bottlers will be served during the cocktail hour preceding the show. The printing of the tickets has been sponsored by Supreme Chemicals Limited, while New Boulevard Motors has made a substantial donation to the event.

Reserved and general tickets for adults, as well as specially priced tickets for children are available at Bijoux, New Kingston and New Boulevard Motors, Washington Boulevard. Tickets will be sold at the venue on the evening of the show.

In the meantime, plans are being finalised for the staging of this year's concert at the Michael Schimmel Centre for the Arts, PACE University, Park Row and Gold Street, Manhattan, New York on Saturday, June 15. There will be two shows at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Air Jamaica is one of the main sponsors of the event.
