A SEVENTH-WICKET century stand between Llewellyn Meggs and Fitzroy Peterkin led defending National Rothmans Senior Cup champions Melbourne to first innings points over Kensington in the feature match at Kensington Park yesterday.
Final score in the two-day match: Kensington 202, Melbourne 266 for seven when play was called off at approximately 5:40 p.m.
Meanwhile at Chedwin Park St. Catherine CC crushed Boys' Town by an innings and 43 runs, while Kingston had to settle for first innings points over Lucas at Nelson Oval.
The points standing reads JDF 23, Melbourne 20, St. Thomas and Lucas 19 each, Kingston 18, Kensington 17, Police 16, St. Catherine 11, Portland five, Boys' Town and Tivoli at the bottom on three points each.
At Kensington Park openers Aubrey Wollaston (39, 2x4) and Dillion Ebanks (27) gave Melbourne a good start, adding 74 runs for the first wicket. However, Melbourne lost three wickets for 10 runs as the home team took control.
Ebanks was the first to go, leg before to Laurie Williams. He was followed by Wollaston who gave Williams an easy catch and Donovan Pagon (five) edged captain David Bernard Jr. behind at 84 for three.
Captain Robert Samuels (five) provided wicketkeeper Junior Stewart with his second catch of the match at 104 for four shortly after lunch.
Ray Stewart (22) and Carlton Baugh (44, 1x4) took the score to 144 before both went within two runs of each other at 146 for six.
Meggs and Peterkin then came together and rebuilt the innings.
The two batted with a lot of determination and confidence. Peterkin was run out for 39 and Meggs was left not out on 60. He hit three fours from from 108 deliveries. Williams 2-35 and Bernard Jr. 2-71 were the pick of the Kensington bowlers.
Earlier when Kensington batted, Williams (53), Maurice Kepple (36), Howard Powell (28) and Samuel Douglas (29) got most runs against Peterkin, Nikita Miller, Conroy Miller and Meggs two wickets each.
