Unsatisfactory postal system

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE PERMIT me to again jump on my soapbox to complain about the delivery of mail in Jamaica.

There is no movement, and I know I am not the only person complaining from home and abroad. What is Minister Paulwell doing to improve the timely distribution of mail from abroad to needy relatives who depend on remittances from family and friends?

Western Union to me is not an option, it's too expensive; quicker, yes, and more secure, but that's beside the point. Taxpayers deserve much better service.

I am writing this on April 15, the deadline to file and mail one's income tax returns in the United States, and I joined the long line with the other 10 million procrastinators to mail in my income tax returns before 12 midnight, and the efficiency and help afforded by the professionals at the Annandale Post Office in Virginia made me wish.

It's time somebody gets on the ball in Jamaica. I mailed three letters to three different address in Jamaica on February 18 and same have not been delivered yet! This is unacceptable. When I called to confirm delivery, the person said to me, "Postman no come today, rain falling." This comment bowled me over.

From what I understand several business places and some utility companies have private delivery services to assure timely bill delivery. If the Government can't cut it, privatise the mail service. The problem is that there is no accountability, complaints are ignored and letters are thrown into file 13.

I am etc.,
