THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHILE THE incidents of AIDS in some countries are now decreasing, Jamaica is not so lucky. The number of reported cases continues to increase. For this reason it would be foolish of the government and people of Jamaica to sit by and allow the doors of the Jamaica AIDS Support to close, all for the wants of a few lousy dollars.
With election in the air and several different parties fielding candidates, there's no doubt in my mind that the reason for the entry of most, if not all these persons into elected politics is first, the love for their country and second, the love of their people. I'm throwing this one in the laps of all incumbent and aspiring Members of Parliament:
It is almost certain that every voter knows of or is related to someone who is HIV-infected or has AIDS. Let the true sign of love for people begin here, starting, first with those 60 elected MPs whose salaries are certain and who also are entitled to draw down from the SESP funds,
With what seems to be a historic number of candidates facing off in any one election, all it needs is $5,000 from each of these candidates to guarantee the amount necessary so that the doors of the AIDS hospice can remain open for at least another year. Keeping these doors open may be of importance. One never knows, it might serve you well.
