THE EDITOR, Sir:
WITH THE many negative views being aired on the state of the Jamaican education system, I thought it necessary to bring to the attention of the public some of the achievements of my fellow Jamaicans at Benedict College.
Last semester at the annual Fall Convocation of the 19 recipients of the President's Trophy for a 4.0 GPA (straight A's) for consecutive semesters there were three Americans two Nigerians and a Trinidadian; the rest were Jamaicans. In addition every other Jamaican student was on the Dean's List for GPA's above 3.5.
But these students are not satisfied with only academic excellence. At the recent Annual Sports Ball, the entire football team (made up mainly of Jamaicans and Trinis) were honoured for there academic excellence and their performance on the field. Others were also recognised for their achievements in tennis, handball and track.
This should give some indication that while the Jamaican education system needs reform it produces some very good students.
I am etc.,
