How did 'Titchfield' get its name?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to you from Titchfield, Hampshire, England. I wonder if any of your readers know how Titchfield, Jamaica got its name.

I look after the Titchfield History Society web site. Recently I had a request from a member who had visited Jamaica and noted that there was an area called Titchfield.

Many place names in the new world got their names from the old, but I have never come across another Titchfield - until now.

Perhaps the two communities could create links via their respective schools or colleges. I look forward to hearing from anyone with information on how Titchfield came to be named.

I am etc.,
