Strikers, JDF set for final

By Charmaine Austin, Staff Reporter

UNBEATEN teams, Millennium Strikers and Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), will feature in today's Credit Union Junior League semi-finals at the Leila Robinson Courts.

The matches will be played simultaneously starting at 5:40 with Millennium Strikers against Jetsetters C and JDF against Speg B.

Unlike their opponents, Speg B and Jetsetters C have each lost a game but are hoping to lower the colours of their rivals today. Speg B lost 31-25 to Millennium while Jetsetters C were beaten 21-14 by the JDF on Saturday.

Jetsetters C are hoping to repeat the feat of their club mates who won the league title last year and gained promotion to the intermediate league but coach C. Lloyd Walker says this will be difficult.

"It's going to be tough. This year's team is younger than the one from last year. We have two 14 year-olds and two 15 year-olds so I'm not expecting too much. In fact, I'm surprised at their performance so far.

"They lost on Saturday and I wasn't even upset because they tried. We have not seen Millennium play but we played them in the semis last year and had the better of them," he said.

Walker is admittedly fielding a weaker team against Dalton Hinds-coached Millennium Strikers and he is hoping for the best.

"The ball is round. Our aim is to stay focussed and motivated and hope for the best. One thing is for certain we will play good netball," he said.

Speg B have been hit with injuries and have been reduced to eight players. Despite this, coach Arlene Findlay says the players have one simple plan - to do their best.

"We won't make any predictions. We just plan to do our best. We have a few injuries so we are just going to try and see what we can do," she said.

Dorrett Williams-Lee, coach of the JDF was super confident ahead of the clash.

"We look very good. I've seen them (Speg B) play and I don't think they can match us. They seem to lack experience.

"The difference between their team and ours is that our players have been playing together for longer. There's no reason why we shouldn't win our game," she said.

The junior league final will be played on Thursday at 5:40 p.m.

Meanwhile defending Berger Senior League netball champions Waulgrovians con tinue to walk all over their opponents.

In the latest round of matches at the weekend they registered an 82-27 win over Seneca A at the Leila Robinson Courts.

In other Senior League games played on Saturday, Windalco defeated DP Raiders 67-34 while Tivoli got by Jetsetters A 45-39.

The Western Union-sponsored Intermediate league has reached the quarterfinal stage. That round starts on Saturday and will feature Braeton, Ebony Strikers, Friendship A, Jetsetters B, Speg A, Alpha A, Molynes A and Tivoli B.
