Tivoli, Nets in Berger showdown

PURE Nets and defending champions Tivoli All Stars will meet in the May 9 Berger Paints Division One basketball title.

Both teams won their best of three semifinals 2-0 at the National Stadium Courts Sunday night.

Tivoli, with David Martin at the fore, demolished Aqua Youth 100-61 while Pure Nets scored a narrow 74-72 win over mid-season champions Urban Knights.

In the first game on Friday Tivoli had defeated Aqua 74-59 while Pure Nets celebrated a 72-69 advantage over the Knights.

Martin with 33 points ensured victory for Tivoli. Dwayne Harris got 22 points for Aqua.

"Winning meant a lot to us. A lot of the big teams were getting beaten so we had to let them know we are champions. We had something to lose so we did what we had to do," Martin said.

Already the team is looking forward to the meeting Pure Nets though they won't take them lightly.

"We can't take any team lightly. We'll attend to them just like everyone else - physical and strong. It should be a good game although I don't think it will go past two games," Martin added.

Pure Net's coach Phillip Grandison is also looking forward to the Tivoli challenge.

"We're definitely looking forward to playing them. Both us and Tivoli are aiming for the title and whichever way it ends up we want to be the team with the favourable result," he said.

The Nets' semifinal win, Grandison said, was part determination and part luck.

With under a minute left on the clock in the final quarter and Urban Knights ahead by four points, Pure Nets got two baskets and sent the game into overtime with the teams locked at 66-66.
