Justice must be tempered with mercy

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WRONGDOING must never be tolerated nor encouraged, but let it always be remembered that - "The quality of mercy is not strained; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes."

In this regard, I am convinced that the very harsh penalties that are being imposed on drug traffickers and other offenders are not having the desired effect and Judges should not be promoted for the harsh penalties which they impose on drug offenders in particular, and on other miscreants as well, but for the mercy and understanding which they display in dispensing judgement.

Wrongdoing must be punished but mercy and understanding must always be shown. In this way crime will be readily and drastically reduced. The true Christian method never fails.

I am, etc.,

HENRY MARTIN
