THE EDITOR, Sir:
ONE HAS to frequently wonder to what further lengths politicians will go to get the attention of the electorate at election time.
Instead of sticking to the elevation of what comes out of the Ministry of Justice, our erudite functionary Minister A.J. Nicholson, probably supported by the 'Patois clan' at the University of the West Indies, has now turned his attention to the elevation of Patois.
Consequently, he has now embarked on the silly concept of bringing a new agency into being to study Patois (see Sunday Gleaner of April 28) in order to open the way for Patois-speaking Jamaicans to do business at collectorates and other agencies.
Supporters of this silliness ought to have their heads examined.
Perhaps they could also be asked to fund a new university where Patois is the first language. I have never seen more arrant contempt for the upliftment of the culture of this country.
I am, etc.,
