OVER 600 assorted rounds of ammunition, one Glock 17 pistol, a US Carbine 30 calibre sub-machine gun all with a street value of over $300,000, were seized last night and more than 40 men detained, during separate operations in the troubled communities of "Southside" in Central Kingston and Wilton Gardens (Rema), South St. Andrew.

The guns and ammunition were found on premises along a pathway in Wilton Gardens, during a joint police/military operation, led by Senior Superintendent Donald Pusey and Deputy Superintendent Delroy Hewitt.

Up to press time last night the detainees were being processed by detectives at the Area 4 Headquarters in downtown Kingston. The lawmen raided the area less than 48 hours after gunmen shot and injured a soldier, a policeman and a 15-year-old schoolgirl in the Trench Town area Tuesday night.

It is understood that all three were treated at hospital and released. At least four persons have been killed over the past two weeks, as a result of the flare-up between rival factions in the area.

According to the police, the men are fighting over turf and the disappearance of a gun. At the centre of the controversy, is a deportee who, the police claim, is fighting to regain control of the area.

Over the past three weeks, there have sporadic shootings in the "Southside" area, which has left one youth dead and several others nursing gunshot wounds.

In an attempt to put a lid on the simmering feud, a joint police/military team led by Deputy Superintendent Cornelius Walker swooped on the community shortly after 1:00 p.m. yesterday

"We detained 20 men who are now being processed," a sub-officer at the Kingston Central CIB told The Gleaner.

The police have embarked on a new initiative, conducting daily operations, cordon and search in the troubled inner-city communities, where there have been flare-ups.
