LEADING JOCKEY Trevor "Slicer" Simpson marked his 50th winner of the season at Caymanas Park yesterday, thanks to his second consecutive triple and his sixth so far in 2002.
Among his winners was the 3-5 favourite FABULOUS CAT who made all in the season's first two-year-old race for the Starter's Trophy over 400 metres straight.
The lovely bay filly, by Al's River Cat out of Kiki, led home highly fancied BANJUHAR by 2 3/4 lengths in a field of five native bred, three of whom (including the runner-up) are owned and trained by Richard Azan.
FABULOUS CAT is owned by Sea Bird, bred by Frederick Leighton and trained by the legendary Billy Williams who posted a second winner on the card in 2-1 chance FEARLESS NATIVE, this in the 3-y-o maiden race.
Simpson also won aboard 6-1 chance BAJAN KING for owner/trainer Lawrence Freemantle in race two over the round five course. Fittingly, he rounded off with his 50th winner, the 3-5 favourite DISTINCTIVE BLEND for leading trainer Wayne DaCosta who has provided him with a high percentage of his winners.
The four-year-old roan filly, by many-time champion sprinter Distinctive Bingo out of That's OK, made all impressively over the straight five course. She galloped on to the main track some two lengths clear of highly fancied AWRY and STRAIGHT SIX, then kept on strongly in the latter stages to beat STRAIGHT SIX (20-1) by 4 1/4 lengths in the field of seven.
In addition to his six triples, Simpson has rode four winners on two occasions this season and a five-timer once. He leads closest rival, Robert Reid by as many as 28 winners. Reid notched his 22nd winner of the campaign aboard 3-1 chance LADY NAJEEBAN in the closing race for $100,000 claimers.
Meanwhile, STAR CREEK at 5-2 won the day's feature race for the Birnamwood Trophy over 1300 metres (claiming $200,000 - $180,000) by two lengths from CIRCLE DE THRONE (9-1) and PALMETTO XPRESS (9-2), who missed the break in the field of nine and had to close from last position.
STAR CREEK, who successfully challenged long-time leader LET THE MUSIC PLAY at the top of the lane, was ridden by Devon A. Thomas for owner Vernon Nannan and trainer Rowan Mathie.
