Violence begets violence

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUR LORD'S teaching was love, to the extent of turning the other cheek. Of course Sir, this sounds foolish to us.

However, if we love peace and want peace, this is the way. For example, the Bible records in 2 Kings 6 v 19-23: "The King of Israel said to Elisha when he saw them my father shall smite them? Shall I smite them? And he answered thou shall not smite them. Wouldest thou smite those whom thou has taken captive with thy sword etc? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master."

"And he prepared great provision for them. And when they had eaten and drank he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into Israel."

If the present Israel in their fight with their neighbours show them this kindness we would be nearer to peace but violence breeds violence all over the world and it is only Jesus the Prince of Peace can control this. May God help us to see the way of peace.

I am, etc.,
