Mudslide disrupts traffic flow

WESTERN BUREAU:

A MUDSLIDE created a major traffic problem along the Clark Town to Jackson Town main road in Trelawny yesterday.

The heavy downpour washed silt from newly reaped canefields on the Long Pond Estates into the roadway, blocking sections of the road and a nearby culvert. As a result of this traffic hazard, traffic came to a standstill in the vicinity of the mudslide.

Workmen from the estates worked feverishly in the downpour to clear the roads and blocked drains. A front-end loader was also used to clear the road.

Many motor vehicles skidded in the mudslide, but the motorists went through it by travelling in single lane on the right-hand side of the roadway.

Rising waters yesterday forced motorists in Jackson Town to resort to single lane traffic in sections of the community.

The problem spot was in the vicinity of the post office, at the intersection of the Jackson Town and Sawyers main roads. When The Gleaner's team visited the area, the post office premises was under deep flood water.

Some vehicles stalled as they tried to make their way through the water.

Five streets in Falmouth - Cornwall, Pitt, Newton, Princess and Trelawny - were also flooded.
