THE EDITOR, Sir:
ACCIDENTS DO happen. It is a normal phenomenon and in many cases the perpetrator is not completely responsible for the action.
It is, however, very disgusting to observe the barbaric reactions of some members of some communities in which an accident occurs. To respond by mobbing the perpetrator which results in death in many instances can only be described as sheer savagery.
The recent incident along Molynes Road in which a JUTC bus driver was mobbed and killed because his bus collided with a motorcycle killing the rider is a typical example of this savagery to which this country has descended.
It is about time we Jamaicans wake up and take a serious look into ourselves and realise how far we are descending morally. It is about time we do some serious self-examination to identify our moral weaknesses and establish acceptable codes and values to guide a serious retrieval programme.
Individuals and groupings need to realise that we all need to participate in the process. The present generation and the upcoming generation need to be exposed to more desirable standards of behaviour. Role models will be a critical component of the programme. What future can we expect when for example we expose our children to lewd lyrics and vulgar body movements on our public television and radio programmes.
I am, etc.,
