New drug detector machines in place at airports

NEW technology to detect drug mules, who have ingested, touched, or come into contact with drugs or money prior to leaving Jamaica, has been put in place at the Norman Manley and Sangster International airports.

Passengers leaving Jamaica yesterday on both Air Jamaica and British Airways were the first to be profiled and screened.

A release from the office of the Ministry of National Security late yesterday said the process will identify any person who has swallowed, used or has been in contact with cocaine.

"Once detected, offenders will be detained and will have to undergo the necessary testing and procedures required by law for committing such offences," the release said.

It said since the start of the year, 295 persons have been arrested after attempting to smuggle drugs via the two major airports. Of the number arrested 90 per cent were destined for the United Kingdom.
