Tanya Stephens and CéCile gave excellent performances at 'Battle of the Sexes'. - File Photos
WHOMEVER THINKS the female of the species is better than the male was proved right at Amnesia Nightclub in Ocho Rios on Saturday night, as the women featured on 'Battle of the Sexes' gave excellent performances.
The female performers in the exquisite form of CéCile, Chrissy D and Tanya Stephens, along with upcoming acts Martina and Action K, gave the patrons something to cheer about and in some cases got the crowd to make more noise than the males could.
Clad in a gold blouse and a pair of jeans hipsters, CéCile's opening songs were pretty low-keyed. However, that was to be short-lived. Pausing to drink some water, she said: "All the man dem inna di house from unnu know say yuh tings nuh big like dis (holding up the water bottle) keep yuh hand a yuh side." As if triggered by a mechanical device, most of the male patrons' two hands were in the air at full stretch.
CéCile was just beginning. She berated men who were incapable of performing in the bedroom, as her song told men to "buy stone fi yuh bingy". Using the ladies to help her with one her songs by saying "fi di man dem", she held nothing back. She lauded men who were good in bed and who were well-endowed, while at the same time encouraging women to be independent.
In one instance, CéCile invited a male patron on-stage as she performed Can Yu Do The Wuk? The eager male patron fell prey to CéCile's wit. Unable to keep up with her he stopped, much to the disappointment of the crowd and CéCile. His request to CéCile to 'come again' was met with the response: "Say mi mus come again? Yuh come a'ready?" This statement had the crowd cheering wildly.
The female deejay still had some way to go. She called up Tanya Stephens, who was even raunchier than CéCile. The two combined to perform Bus Back Skettel, which had the women and men cheering. Tanya Stephens' statement to the women had the crowd shouting even more, when she said: "Wi a talk to di wife dem who sey dem own di man. Sake a we unnu have fi go back a gym go bun dem fat deh." The two continued to thrill the crowd before CéCile exited. Tanya Stephens continued the male bashing. She said she needed not to laud the well-endowed men in the house, since CéCile had already succeeded in separating the men from the boys.
She settled down to business with some old songs as well as some new ones and did clips of Mary J. Blige's I'm Going Down and Lisa Stanfield's Been Around The World. She said that if she was going down, it was to visit another man and if he left it, was no bother to her, as he could be replaced with another.
Earlier, Action K opened the women's account by stating that she was in the house to "defend all woman because di man dem nah give we nuh ratings". Her performance of some of her songs had the crowd shouting their approval. She told females that they were to tell the jealous 'wives' she had Wuk Yuh Man Already and went on to say that she had no qualms with dealing with men roughly in her song Deal Wid Man Hard, a song which earned her a second stint on-stage. The other act, Martina, was also good. While not as raunchy as the person who came before her or the ones who came after, she showed she had talent, earning several 'forwards' for When I'm Weak, an inspirational number. She chastised women beaters with Be That Girl and did one other tune before exiting. Chrissy D also gave a good performance. However, she had to turn down several proposals from some male patrons in the audience, who kept requesting her to allow them to take her home. While on-stage, she too managed earn some 'forwards' from the audience.
On a whole, it was a good night, as all the acts performed well, with the men also delivering.
