A parable of united ants

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON THE afternoon of Tuesday May 21 a few of my colleagues and I watched with bated breath and a little bit of glee a great battle between a worm and a host of ants. The battle was so intense and interesting that not even the cricket match between India and West Indies, that was interestingly poised at that time, could get much of our attention.

This worm was like a monster to its attackers, which were few at the start of the struggle. This number, however, grew significantly when their adversary refused to surrender.

The war finally ended when this creeping animal was overpowered by a great number of united and determined set of fighters.

Needless to say that, that destructive element that can sometimes cause so much damage to property and other essentials was led away for good, probably for an afternoon meal.

Crime is a big 'monster' in our country at this time; it cannot be destroyed by any one group or organisation. Too much talking and who is to be blamed will not help. Like those ants, each insect came and played their part.

They did not stay in the comfort of their home and depend on others to do a task that was large for them.

If all well thinking and law-abiding citizens of Jamaica unite in the fight against crime, we will succeed.

I am, etc.,

KEITH DAVIS
