THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RECENT spate of violence in the schools is an indication of the high level of indiscipline in the society. It is also a reflection of most students' inability to deal with social conflict. Conflict management courses should be taught in schools, starting at the primary level. In addition, a conflict management department should also be established in every educational institution.
Courses such as Social Psychology, Social Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution would contribute to the reduction of violence in the schools.
A student who is exposed to conflict management courses would understand the nature of conflicts and the appropriate methods to be employed in dealing with conflicts. These courses would equip the students with the skills necessary for negotiation and mediation in order to ensure peace. It would also allow the students to recognise that people do not have problems with people, instead people have problems with issues.
A conflict management department would operate similar to a guidance counselling department in that it deals with social issues. Guidance counsellors are not conflict managers and therefore lack expertise in conflict resolution. All schools should establish a department, adequately staffed and equipped, with the sole responsibility to intervene in violent confrontations in order to ensure a rational resolution.
