Missing Mico student in UK jail?

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

Warner Gerd Steele

A FINAL YEAR student at Mico Teachers' College, who was reported missing two weeks ago from the school's campus in Kingston, is believed to be in police custody in the United Kingdom.

Family members who spoke with The Gleaner yesterday said they had been unable to locate Warner Gerd Steele, popularly called 'Blade', a 22-year-old resident of Flagaman district, St. Elizabeth, since May 22.

However, they said information they had received indicated a passenger going by the name Warner Steele was on an Air Jamaica flight to the UK on that day and was later arrested on drug charges.

The local police are now trying to confirm the detainee is the 'missing' student.

"We understand that somebody with the same name has been arrested in the UK for drugs. We are now sending a photograph of the student to Interpol for them to confirm," said Superintendent Rosie McDonald-Barker.

Another student who was on the same flight and who returned to Jamaica is believed to have informed the police about the detention in the UK.

Detectives are now pursuing reports that several students at tertiary institutions are being lured by drug dealers to smuggle drugs into the UK.
