THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR. RONALD Thwaites, M.P. for Central Kingston, has brought his concerns over the dredging and reclamation of land in the Hunts Bay area of Kingston Harbour to public attention. His public concern is but one of many that has occurred over the redevelopment of Kingston Harbour and the city of Kingston and for that matter Jamaica as a whole.
This redevelopment pattern has left our capital city divided into two halves an uptown and a neglected downtown. Downtown should have been and still can be the cultural, spiritual and economic capital of the Caribbean Kingston, Jamaica the capital city of one love. I believe that peace and love is going to be the new agenda of an emerging New World and Jamaica is going to be the spiritual centre of this New World.
It would be easy to cast blame on our institutions for the sorry state of our capital city but that would only be looking back. We the people, partly by lack of information, have contributed the most of this sorry state of affairs. So this letter is to state that we the people must begin to demand involvement in the process of our development.
This is the dawn of a new era where the agenda is people. People must now become involved in the affairs of our country. The voice of the people is the voice of God - it is time for people both here and worldwide to assert their voice for the voice of people is part of the development process. The voice of people is not only about God, it is ideas; it is thought; it is inventions; it is love; it is the voice of the human spirit of God.
I am, etc.,
