Portland cleans-up in resheduled Labour Day

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

SEVERAL BEACHES, drains and sidewalks in Port Antonio were cleaned in a rescheduled Labour Day project over the weekend.

The project was spearheaded by Ralph Fallon, of the Social Development Commission (SDC) local office, along with Cynthia "Polly" Perry, branch manager of the Jamaica Tourist Board office in Port Antonio.

Sections of the Folly main road were cleared and bushed, with the aid of a weed whacker, and assistance was also given by 25 volunteers. The project exercise also extended along the east harbour where fishermen were kept busy clearing away plastic bottles and other waste along the beach.

Mr. Fallon, organiser of the project, told The Gleaner on Saturday, June 1 that the main objective of the project is to restore the once healthy and friendly environment in and around Port Antonio.

"We have to practise proper garbage disposal", said Mr. Fallon. "One has to be concerned about the environment itself, and safe guard not only his or her health, but also others. The dumping of garbage on the road, sidewalk, along the beach and rivers has got to stop", Mr. Fallon added.

The organiser also stated that residents should practise safe garbage disposal habits at home.

On Sunday, June 2, officers from the Coastal Water quality Improvement Project (CWIP), along the Portland Environ-mental Protection Agency (PEPA), also carried out major cleaning and clearing operations along the Bryans Bay Beach.

Both Labour Day projects slated for May 23, were rescheduled because of heavy rains.
