Let's have debate

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EVERY TIME something good is said about Jamaica, it causes a big fuss. It doesn't matter who said it, it makes no difference. So one gets the impression that nothing good is happening in this country, therefore nothing good should be said about our island.

Dr. Peter Phillip said recently that Jamaica is in the best shape since Independence. Of course, he is taken to task from every angle of the society. Whatever the reason or reasons that cause the National Security Minister to come to that conclusion, he is entitled to his opinion.

On the other hand Mr. Edward Seaga, Leader of the Opposition, is saying Jamaica is in its worst shape ever. The former Prime Minister is also free to rebut Minister Phillip's statement.

Many persons in Jamaica and abroad will no doubt agree with both gentlemen and probably both sides have very strong claims to justify their argument.

So wouldn't be a good thing to have a National Debate on the issue? And let the people decide.

In this regard some relevant institutions such as the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) and the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) could play a significant role in this debate.

I am, etc.,

KEITH DAVIS
