RESIDENTS IN Flint River and other nearby communities in Hanover staged a massive demonstration yesterday about the poor condition of the road in their communities.
Old vehicles, boulders and tyres were used to block the main road, as they tried to get the attention of the authorities.
According to the residents, the road from Flint River to Cascade in the parish has been in such a deplorable condition it can hardly be used. They added that the use of the road by heavy trucks, which are working on the North Coast Highway project, has made the situation worse.
"The road is bad, really bad," a resident of Flint River who gave her name only as Shelly Ann, told The Gleaner.
She added that the recent rain has made the road so bad that in some places it cannot be used at all.
"Children cannot go to school and the taxi men refuse to carry passengers because they say it (the road) damage their vehicle. We don't know what to do," she added.
Mayor of Lucea, Councillor Lloyd Hill, sympathised with residents. "It is rather unfortunate that this is the way the people have to express themselves but something has to be done about the road," the mayor, who visited the area yesterday, told The Gleaner.
Mayor Hill said that although the Ministry of Transport and Works sent a team of surveyors into the community about a month ago, there has been no sign of when repair work will begin.
