THE EDITOR, Sir:
On Sunday I had reason to drive on Marcus Garvey Drive from downtown westerly towards Tinson Pen. I cannot believe that this main road which so many commuters use to gain access to their daily bread should still be in this state of disrepair.
I am speaking of an extremely rough patch (covered with marl) that resembled what one expects the bottom of the sea to look like. I have heard spokesmen from the National Works Agency (NWA) promising that roads that were cut for patching, should not remain in that condition for more than two days. Then Mr. Vando Palmer what, pray, is the time limit on stretches of main roads 'primed' for resurfacing? As it is right now it will need another layer of marl and compacting before it can be asphalted. I do demand as a taxpayer that this stretch of road be treated as a priority.
Now while I'm at it, I hope that the back roads also get speedily repaired. I use the Port Henderson road to exit and access Portmore and it too is in a terrible state of disrepair, I know there are many smaller roads with the same condition. But why should we the taxpayers of this country not expect our government to provide us with properly asphalted roads. Not the kind that breaks down after a few days of rain. Where are the quality inspectors?
We have accepted for too long that two-thirds the money for contracts should fatten 'people's' pockets. Enough is just enough. It is now time to demand quality work for our tax dollars.
