A plea from 'Mother Earth'

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Who am I and why I am here?

Is the question we seek;

We seem to live in fear,

Are the technological prospects so bleak?

The above is the opening stanza of the poem, Mother Earth's Message that I dedicated to "Give the Earth a Chance" - NEPA's concert during their Earth Awareness Week last week.

I hoped to deliver the message as Mother Earth, that our environmental home is in critical condition, to say the least, and deserves our attention more than ever!

This article is not merely another cry out in the wilderness asking for renewed assistance in our quest for enviro-protection. These are the dying words of an anguished and forsaken Mother Earth who needs you! She is steeped in oil, solid waste, sewage, and sedimentation - her powers are no longer able to stand upright to your contaminants. And in the real world there does not exist any Captain Planet!

You may think that I am joking, but I could not be more serious. Our precious Mother Earth is losing her strength because her elements - wind, water, earth - are sources of technological advancement, thus used and abused. She is tired of pleading for your co-operation in futuristic planning. Why is that the bread and butter issues always seem to attract our investors? Are the top-notch companies not interested in a sustainable country? In a country in which sustainable development is more important than the initial economic benefits? Sure, there are many opportunities to be had, but is all that glitters worthy to behold?

I am one of the Advisors (and a Founder-President) to the Student Environment Network (SEN). For all of you out there who still do not know, we are the youth arm of the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) and we are interested in all you students that are environmentally aware and want to be active. We engage in activities such as clean-ups, organic gardening, tree planting, recycling, conferences and much more. We welcome you to join us at 11 Waterloo Road on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. or contact us at 960-3693 or senclubjamaica@yahoo.com,
