Vendors and tourism

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN RESPONSE to the craft vendors and customer service letter I wish to say this:

Jamaican vendors have nothing compared to the vendors in Asia, Middle East and other Third World countries which I have toured. At least the Jamaican vendors ask their customers to "take a look."

The vendors in other parts of the world grab your clothing, arm, person, and push the product in your face. Now that is a major ordeal, because one cannot figure out if you are being robbed or solicited.

The same tourists that are complaining about the vendors in Jamaica are probably salespersons themselves in America and other parts of the world. Their job is to call and harass people in their homes early in the morning, during dinner and late at night. They will not take 'no' for an answer. Before you can make a decision, a decision is already made for you. Whether you like it or not.

While I don't see the vendors' method of selling a "major ordeal," I can suggest that the vendors take a different approach in selling their products, so they can attract and satisfy the tourist industry.

I am etc.
