HARBOUR VIEW'S loss will be the national football team's gain.
Former national midfielder Peter Cargill has given up the post of head coach of Harbour View FC, a position he has held since 1998, to concentrate on national coaching duties.
When Carl Brown was appointed as technical director designate last December, Cargill, the former Camperdown Manning Cup player was named as coach, effectively Brown's assistant. He held on to his position as Harbour View coach until recently when he was forced to do so under an apparent restructuring exercise with the coaching staff.
"I think that in order to see games, see players and spend more time with the national programme that I have to be full time with the federation," the 1998 World Cup veteran told The Gleaner yesterday. "The job will become more demanding so I am treating it as such," said Cargill who will be under contract until 2004.
Cargill also stated that with technical director designate Brown set to head back to England for pre-season work with Premiership outfit Bolton Wanderers, he will be the man at home to steer the national programme. Besides those responsibilities, the man who led Harbour View to the National Premier League title in 2000, to the finals in 1999 and semi-final placings in 2001 and 2002, will have direct responsibility for the Under-23 programme.
"I will take charge of the Under-23 programme and coach (Wendell) Downswell and I are working with the Under-20s right now. In fact both of us will travel to Cuba on July 8 for a game against that country's Under-20 team."
Harbour View, in the meantime, are on the look out for a new man to shape their team. "We are now accepting applications," said administrator Ludlow Bernard.
"The policy is to look within before looking outward. We have not done an evaluation yet but I am sure that will not prevent us from accepting applications," Bernard said.
