Lara - File ST.GEORGE'S, CMC:
WORLD batting record holder Brian Lara moved past Gordon Greenidge Sunday to become the third highest Test scorer all-time for the West Indies.
Lara stroked an attacking 48 against New Zealand on the third day of the second Cable and Wireless Test match - his 90th Test -- to push his career total to 7,572 runs.
He equalled Greenidge's 7,558 runs when he had reached 34. The former opening batsman, now a selector, accumulated his runs from 108 matches.
Lara, still short of his best form as he recovers from an elbow injury, struck seven fours in a breezy knock Sunday before he edged seamer Scott Styris to wicket-keeper Chris Hart.
Sir Vivian Richards, now chief selector, is the all-time West Indies leader with 8,540 runs from 121 Tests, followed by Sir Garfield Sobers with 8,032 runs from 93 matches.
The 33-year-old Lara, whose individual world records 375 (test) and 501 (first-class) have stood since the mid 1990s, needs only 968 runs to reach the top spot, held by Sir Vivian.
Lara was West Indies captain for two years from 1998, but gave up the job after only sporadic success and heavy series defeats on tour to South Africa and New Zealand.
Clive Lloyd, with 7,515 runs from 110 games, completes the top-five on the West Indies list.
