THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS a profound understatement that today in Jamaica, marijuana or ganja is being widely abused or used throughout our small island.
In every nook and cranny in our island users of the weed can be seen. First time, they would show some degree of respect by staying on the street corners, in some inconspicuous area and smoke, now they are brazenly seen in the shopping malls, both uptown and downtown with a spliff in their mouths.
It is no secret that marijuana can be very harmful. Scientific research substantiates the fact that ganja is a psychotic drug. It has negatively affected the minds of many young bright and ambitious people. Also it has influenced them to become insolent and unproductive.
I must commend scientists for revealing the great medicinal properties such as is used in the treatment of glaucoma.
I beseech each and every Jamaican to see marijuana as a drug that has had an adverse effect on the economy of the country. Whether it has helped the economy to grow or otherwise is a debatable topic. However, I have some sanctity for the drug because of the Rastafarian belief and religion. The Rastafarians are very productive and talented people who are peaceful, pleasant and conscious.
Please show some restraint for the smoking of marijuana and spend more of quality time nourishing more positive values.
I am, etc.,
