How to stop youth violence

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Fourteen-year-old Marlon Carter II, born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, and who now resides in Miami, Florida recently won an essay contest in the National Campaign on How to Stop Youth Violence.

He is the son of Jamaican businessman, Marlon Carter, and former national table tennis representative, Joan Dickenson. For his efforts Marlon, one parent and his Highland Oaks teacher will enjoy a five-day expense paid trip from July 6 to the national finals in Washington DC.

Twenty-two finalists were selected nationwide from over 2,500 essays submitted. These finalists are expected to meet with the Secretary of State Colin Powell, the Attorney General John Ashcroft as well as other senators.

"It will take a collective effort," Marlon's words to the Miami Herald newspaper. Marlon intends to make Jamaica proud.
