Outlawed lottery gimmicks legalised

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEAKA pow and drop pan were from time immemorial locally, underground illegal games of chance, like all such gambles, structured with the odds heavily stacked against the players, and the principals (house) guaranteed handsome profit!

Our current lotteries are just legalised, computerised copies of those outlawed gimmicks, affording the players the opportunity to now indulge these new versions openly and without fear of prosecution by law.

The latest lottery company has been celebrating in no uncertain manner their tremendous success after one year in 'business'! They boast that they have paid out almost five billion dollars to winners from a turnover of some nine billion.

Surely all this money accrued from players islandwide gambling against tremendous odds with the forlorn hope of drawing a 'hand'! Not easy to win!

What appreciation for the faithful losing addicts? Is the benefit to the nation appropriate? Our local entertainers did not totally qualify for the Birthday Bash!

I am, etc.,

DISGRUNTLED PLAYER
