Zoo chides 'monkey business' in its search for 'Sammy'

CURATORS AT Hope Zoo, St. Andrew, yesterday ap-pealed to members of the public to desist from making prank calls, as they continue their search for "Sammy," a capuchin monkey which escaped on Wednesday.

"We are still trying to locate Sammy and when we get these crank calls we end up checking them out only to find nothing there," Charlene Alexander, acting assistant curator, told The Gleaner in an interview yesterday. She said several searches were conducted yesterday to find Sammy, but without success, and they were undertaking an internal investigation to find out how Sammy escaped.

Miss Alexander is urging the public to treat the case of the missing monkey seriously.

Sammy escaped from Hope Zoo about 10 a.m. on Wednesday. He is a capuchin or South American monkey with a cowl-like cap of hair on the head. It is 1 1/2 feet tall, dark brown and hairy with large pointed teeth.

Residents of Hope Pastures and other areas near to the zoo are strongly advised not to approach or attempt to capture or restrain the monkey which will bite people if it feels threatened.
