"Portmore is my place of birth and I have a commitment to it," said Wright, whose wife, Blossom, is operations manager at the 54 Port Henderson Road bakery, a stone's throw away from the Bayside round-a-bout.
Wright said the idea was concepted nearly 15 years ago and the bakery was set-up two or three years later, serving mainly Portmore and its environs.
"We figured there was a need for Portmore to have its own bakery," he explained, "the population demanded it. We believed, for several reasons, geographic and otherwise, we would have good returns and the investment would prove a profitable one."
Under the management of Wright's wife, the bakery now employs 12 persons but has "25 or so, who indirectly depend on us for a living", he added.
"We could have gone and done it outside but Portmore needs to identify with its own products," said the 50-odd year-old businessman, adding the bakery is almost next door his first school.
In keeping with the operations of many small businesses, Right's Bakery has had its ups and downs but building a solid customer base over the years has paid off.
"We have the best customers in the world and that's no catch phrase," Wright pointed out. "In addition to advertising extensively in The Gleaner, all our customers are our friends on a one-to-one basis. This is a very good community and the people are extremely cordial."
With its wide variety of baked products, Right's Bakery also offers drink items such as bag and box juices at wholesale and retail prices in addition to eggs.
Demand for Wright's products has since gone beyond Portmore's boundaries, something he said he's looking at, but for now it's his "loyal clientele", which comes first.
