THE EDITOR, Sir:
I RECENTLY had the pleasure of meeting one of the candidates running for Member of Parliament in the constituency in which I reside. Forgive me for expecting too much of our electoral "system", but if our honourable prime minister is to be believed, there will be elections within 5 months and I am just meeting a candidate. The only reason I know who is the sitting M.P., is through the media, as his candidacy caused some discord within his party.
I have never seen him in person, but who knows, he might feel insecure enough to pop out of his hole, flash a smile and make some false promises.
As a young professional, I am dismayed at what my country has become. Nothing is worthy of celebration anymore. Gone are the days of the street parades that I viewed with interest as a child. It is replaced by poorly financed and supported road shows, which fail to attract the really talented in our society. Maybe that is what a country mired in scandals and blatant mismanagement deserves.
Still I believe that our forefathers struggled too hard and too many lives have been lost, for us to allow enemies (both local and overseas) of patriotic Jamaicans to win. We must, as individuals, take a stand for the betterment of our country.
I am etc,
