THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WAS extremely distressed to hear the news of Sammy's demise. In discussion with persons about his escape I had stated that it was my hope that such an eventuality would not take place but alas it did. I have often wondered about the security of the cages at the zoo (even though that may not have been the cause of his escape) and the unkempt condition of the property.
The Hope Zoo has long been of great concern to me. I am forced to remember the glorious Hope Zoo of the past - zoo, gardens and amusement park. I remember the days when the amusement park was abuzz with excitement. Now, when I go all I see is bush and bramble. It saddens me to see such a great childhood treasure in such a state of disrepair.
I believe it would be great if some of our corporate giants took on the challenge and provide our children with a place to love, enjoy and call their own. Too often, we as parents have to search for things to do with our children. We have to rely on fairs and expos but why can't we have a constant form of entertainment by way of our park and zoo?
I know that there are plans to rejuvenate the Hope Zoo but why so long. Why does everything in this country have to have a delayed reaction? While we wait, the animals at the zoo sit in despair. Poor Sammy must have been so lonely and unhappy. I know that animals can appreciate beauty and company and right now that does not appear to exist. It is not my intention to berate those persons involved in the Hope Zoo project but it is my intention to appeal to those persons who can help the dream become a reality.
I also wish to express my sympathy to those persons at Immaculate who donated Sammy to the zoo. I know it is a great loss.
I am etc,
SIMONE FOOTE
