Williams steals spotlight at Caymanas Park

By Melton Williams, Staff Reporter

FORMER CHAMPION jockey Percy Williams yesterday overshadowed the hot pair of leading rider Trevor Simpson and Trinidadian Brian Harding by booting home a three-timer at Caymanas Park - the first time this year.

The jockey of the day opened his account with an easy victory aboard 3-5 favourite LOVE MACHINE in the second race over 1200 metres, the six-year-old bay gelding won by nine lengths. His other winners were 5-2 choice SONG SO SWEET, who easily beat CHOCOLATE SLEW (Simpson up) in the sixth over 1100 metres and TROPICAL STAR at 3-2 in the seventh over the circular 1820 metres course.

However, Simpson who was tipped to land a four-timer, had two winners, a figure which is required per raceday to overhaul George HoSang's record of 167 winners in a season, the feat the jockey is chasing.

Harding, second in the jockeys' championship, had one winner in 7-2 chance HEAVENLY DREAMS in the fourth race over 1200 metres to push his season's tally to 36 winners, 61 behind runaway leader Simpson.

Also getting in the act was Kenyatta Davis who booted home PILLARS OF POWER in the first and MYKONOS in the ninth to move to 21 winners and seventh place in the standings.

Simpson, who has highlighted the card for the past four weeks with Harding, unsaddled ZEALOT (fifth race) and QUEEN'S SYMPHONY (eighth) in the winners' enclosure.

The day produced a major upset in the closing event to silence the midweek crowd. This was recorded by 54-1 outsider GATLIN (Devon A. Thomas up) who romped home in the Harry Rigg Memorial Cup over 1400 metres by 2 1/2 lengths from the Larris Allen-ridden favourite ATLANTIC PRINCESS.

The four-year-old bay gelding went by long-time leader BUCKEISHA passing the 600 metre post. He turned for home with a good-looking lead and was never in danger although being chased by a wall of horses.
