BITU trying to save Victoria Banana jobs

CHARLES

THE BUSTAMANTE Industrial Trade Union (BITU) is calling for a meeting involving the Government, the Jamaica Producers Group and the unions representing workers at Victoria Banana, Clarendon, which is to be closed next Wednesday.

In a statement today, BITU vice-president, Pearnel Charles, said that a contact at Jamaica Banana Producers (JBP) had indicated that the company is open to suggestions from the Government and the unions on possible ways of continuing the production of banana in Clarendon.

WILLING TO RESOLVE SITUATION

Mr. Charles said it would be difficult for 300 workers to accept the closure of the plant at this time and is calling on the Government to intervene, with the view of finding a solution to the problem that the company is experiencing.

"The workers and their unions are willing to co-operate in working out an acceptable solution to the problem," he said.

JBP announced on Thursday that it would be closing the Victoria Banana plant at Parnassus, near May Pen, Clarendon, on July 31 and send home over 300 workers in order to meet debt payments.
