Shallow perspective, Mr. Cooke

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ Melville Cooke's article in The Gleaner this week on 'gay rights vs his rights', and wish to add my own comments. I thought it was somewhat a shallow and selfish perspective, with inappropriate quotes from homophobic songs coming out of Jamaica's music industry.

What is it with this obsession or phobia(fear) with homosexuality and sexual preference? I must say after reading this article and hearing about recent violent attacks against gays in Jamaica, I can put into better perspective recent UN ranking of Jamaica (86th best place in the world to live). If you look at the countries in the top 5 positions, countries like Norway, Sweden and Canada, apart from having advanced economic and social infrastructures, they are tops when it comes to human rights and civil liberties which is fundamental to one's standard of living, comfort and freedom.

If Jamaica continues to be obsessed with sexuality, and I think that a person's gender or sexual preference determine character or civil rights or contribution to society, then you better be proud of your poor ranking amongst the rest of the world!

I am, etc.,

P. CHONG
