Gordon, Woolery to take up overseas scholarships

By Paul A. Reid, Senior Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

CAPTAIN Garrick Gordon and midfielder DeShaun Woolery of 2001 schoolboy football triple champions Cornwall College are expected to leave the island on Wednesday to take up football scholarships at San Jacinto Junior College in Houston, Texas.

Gordon who captained the Cornwall College team to five titles in the last two seasons and Woolery, both who represented the Montego Bay school since 1998, will join another former Cornwall College student Garnett Chisholm who led the San Jacinto team in scoring last year.

The former right wing back who also played in the midfield for Cornwall and Violet Kickers scored over 20 goals last year to break the team's single season record and led them to the play-offs.

The Gleaner understands that both Gordon who will pursue a degree in engineering and Woolery who will study business management were hotly recruited by coach Ben Hunter.

Woolery, who also represented Violet Kickers, told the Gleaner that he hopes to complete his Associate's Degree at San Jacinto before moving on to a four-year school to complete his Bachelor's degree.

The central midfielder who prides himself on making the final pass that leads to a goal but who managed to score 23 goals in his four years at Cornwall said that he had already heard that a number of four-year institutions, including the highly respected University of South Carolina had been making inquiries about him.

He said however that making his grades and maintaining his scholarship would be his main priority as the football skills would always be there.

Gordon who took over the captain's arm band from Chisholm at the start of the 2000 season led his team from the front scoring over 30 goals in the last two seasons, 19 in 2000 when they won the daCosta Cup and Ben Francis and 13 last season when they swept the tables.
