World Junior Championships a monumental success

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE RECENTLY concluded World Junior Championships, held right here in Jamaica was a monumental success. Special commendations must be extended to all who facilitated the making of the championship into what it was. Plaudits to the organising committee headed by Dr. Vin Lawrence, who ensured that the stadium was in immaculate condition when the games got under way.

To the volunteers, some of the unsung heroes of the championships, extremely well done. Your professionalism ensured that the meet ran right on time - excellent job.

The opening and closing ceremonies were spectacles, testaments to Jamaica's storied history and diverse culture. For this, much is owed to Ashe and the various dance ensembles that performed. To the crowd, the atmosphere you created in the stadium was electric. Your support for the athletes, both local and international, perfectly epitomised the essence of Jamaica and Jamaicans.

To the athletes, the lead actors in this wonderful production, 'nuff' respect. Your performances were absolutely scintillating. Our Jamaican athletes, buoyed by the hysterical support they got from the partisan crowds, performed at a level they had never done before, winning an unprecedented 11 medals. Though all the athletes must be lauded for their performances, special mention must be made of 200 metre men's gold medallist, Usain Bolt and the members of the winning 4 x 100 women's relay team.

To all the participants, well done. Kingston 2002 was indeed a regal spectacle, a spectacle previously unseen in any 'Third World' country. To all who made it possible, thanks for the memories. You made me feel so proud to be Jamaican.

I am etc.,
