Materialism and savings

THE EDITOR, Sir:

GOVERNMENT'S SOLID achievement of everyone owning a car and a cellular phone is like the building of a house without steel and foundation. What this has led to in my humble opinion is a worsening of our already high propensity not to save. Car and cellular expenses has caused the ordinary Jamaican to stop saving and not only has he stopped saving he is depleting whatever savings he had before this solid achievement.

In my work environment there are people driving cars and still every week they are the very ones begging for small change to buy gas and buy phone card, their salary just cannot take all the expenses and therefore there is no saving taking place for their future.

Young people have resorted to gambling for their future. This impoverishing of our people for a solid achievement must stop. People must be encouraged to start saving and stop being so unnecessarily materialistic.

Poor people no longer save for the education and health of their family, every last dollar goes into car bill and cellular bill. People, wise up and stop this impoverishing of our next two generations. I am not prepared to sit idly by and watch this happen to our people.

I am etc.,
