THE NARCOTICS police made another ganja bust at Port Bustamante in Kingston yesterday when divers found a canister with compressed ganja attached to the hull of a cargo ship.
Head of the Narcotics Division, Senior Superintendent Carl Williams, said the canister with the drug was later destroyed by the police.
This is the fourth major ganja bust over the past two weeks. Since January, compressed ganja weighing about 44,425 pounds, with a street value of over $89 million, has been seized.
On Saturday, the police seized 1,991 pounds of ganja during a massive operation in Llandovery, St. Ann. Two Bahamians and two Jamaicans were arrested and two vehicles were seized. Last Wednesday, 527 pounds of ganja were detected in a false compartment of a 40-foot container at Port Bustamante. According to the police, there has been one arrest so far.
The previous week, the Customs Enforcement Team (CET) found a large quantity of ganja among boxes of syrup that were destined to the Netherlands. The drug was found in tins and packages wrapped with brown tape. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of one person.
