Dredging to start at minor ports

TRANSPORT AND Works, Minister Robert Pickersgill, recently disclosed that more than $200 million would be spent on dredging operation at outports during this fiscal year, with work slated to be done at Montego Bay, Port Antonio West Harbour and the Port of Ocho Rios.

He made the disclosure as he delivered his contribution to the 2002/03 Sectoral Debate in the House.

The Minister said these projects along with the continuing Port Antonio Marina development, the continued expansion and upgrading of the Kingston container terminal and the dredging of Kingston Harbour, would be among the capital programmes of the Port Authority of Jamaica for the 2002/03 fiscal year. The preparatory aspects of the works and the projects have already been completed and the work.

Giving an update on the activities in Portland, the Minister reported:

The practical completion of the West Harbour project;

Completion of the marina building and beach;

Completion of Kenright Pier - all 32 slips are now available the berthing of mega yachts;

Provision of a Marine police station -- the most modern in Jamaica in keeping with the features and ambience of the project;

The promenade and access are almost complete, and;

Work on the boatyard is to be completed in August.
