Atkinson, netballers in action

MANCHESTER, England:

JAMAICA'S top swimmer, Janelle Atkinson, bows into action today at the XVII Commonwealth Games.

Atkinson, who was fourth in the 400m freestyle at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, will compete in the 200m freestyle today along with Angella Chuck.

Tamara Swaby will compete in the 50m butterfly while Ramon James is down to swim in the men's 50m backstroke.

In netball, Jamaica face Australia in a crucial Pool B match today with the winners guaranteed a semi-final berth. The losers go on to face the third-placed team from Pool A for a semi-final spot.

Both countries are on six points from three consecutive victories but Australia have the edge with a goal difference of 134 to Jamaica's 107. The Australians have scored 232 goals with 96 against and Jamaica's record is 215-108.

Yesterday Jamaica notched up their third straight win brushing aside Fiji 84-33 to set up today's showdown. Goal shooter Elaine Davis remained on fire with 58 goals from 64 attempts while Simone Forbes netted 18 of 20.

Fiji's top scorer was Matelita Shaw with 14 from 23. Jamaica led 37-16 at half time and increased the gap to 63-23 at half time.

In squash Karen Anderson advanced to the semi-finals of the women's plate competition. She beat St. Lucia's Lindy-Ann Alexander 9-6, 9-3, 9-1 and will face another St. Lucian Alana Simmons today.

James Bullock missed out on a semi-final spot in the men's competition when he was beaten 9-3, 9-1, 10-8 by Scotland's Neil Frankland.

Jamaica's men finished 14th overall in table tennis playoffs. They beat Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 but lost 3-2 to Mauritius.
