THE USUALLY quiet town of Lucea, Hanover will be buzzing with activities today as that capital town hosts its annual Cross-the-Harbour and Fisherman Regatta.
The event, which is in its second year after thirteen years of absence, is expected to attract Hanoverians and other participants from across the island for a fun-filled day. It was revived last year as a means of attracting visitors to Hanover, while contributing to the parish's economic growth.
Organisers are confident that the wide range of water sports and other activities will lure patrons of all ages. "We have something for all ages," President of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, Ryan Morrison told The Gleaner.
The main event begins at the crack of dawn when fishermen in the area are expected to participate in a fishing tournament in which winners will be declared for the biggest fish and the heaviest catch. "The total combined prize for both winners will be $10,000," Mr. Morrison said.
ACTIVITIES
Other activities slated for the day include motor boat racing, canoeing, kayaking, bamboo raft race and wheel boat racing, a sunset cruise and para-sailing. Morrison said that there will also be a merry go round and a 'bounce about' for younger patrons, who are not able to participate in the water sports.
However, the highlight of the day will be the much anticipated cross the harbour swim. This event is divided into three categories male, female and veteran and is essentially open as the winner can come from any of the three categories. Last year's winner Raine Paulson will be on hand to defend her title. This year's prize for the winner will be $20,000.
After the day's festivities, there will be a grand party at Forth Charlotte featuring Marlon Young of Fame FM.
Mr. Morrison said that the proceeds from the event are expected to go towards the Chamber's aim of bringing technology to Hanover. "We are lacking technology in the parish," he said. "And we at the chamber are adamant to bring it to Hanover." He said that one idea the Chamber of Commerce is the building of Internet cafes, so that persons in the parish could have access to the World Wide Web.
