A soldier's story

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to say something about the soldier who took his SLR home from Up Park Camp to challenge someone who he knew had an home-made gun. This young soldier must have heard stories from friends or relatives about the old soldiers in the old days. This is the type of action the old soldiers would take in 'back in the day.' I am not saying that what he did was right, he went about it wrong but he achieved a good result.

I just felt I had to say something seeing as I was a member of the JDF, I served proudly for six years then left for the United States and joined the US Army. I am still in the US Army after 14 years. I love Jamaica, I love the JDF. Once soldiers use to stand tall and proud, there used to be no one more proud than the JDF soldier yet humble enough to always be there to help the ordinary people. That's what attracted me to the JDF because I grew up in Jones Town (Jungle) and always saw soldiers patrolling through our streets and they would always greet us (kids) with respect and talk to us about growing up and being productive in society.

I would like to say "big up" to all JDF soldiers, hold your head and keep the fire burning.

"Five-o'clock must come."

I am etc.,
